CHRIS ROOS (ADV)

Chris Roos is the CEO of CHRIS ROOS & ASSOCIATES, a boutique consulting firm specialising exclusively in engineering and construction law based in Somerset West in the Western Cape, South Africa. Chris holds a Bachelor in Law Degree (LL.B) from the University of South Africa, MDP (Diploma in Business Management) from the University of Manchester (United Kingdom), a National Diploma in Project Management, a National Diploma in Advanced Project Management (Cum Laude) and a Diploma in Advanced Contract and Construction Law from the University of Pretoria. He has further received modular training in the academic fields of Psychology, Sociology and Public Administration. He is an admitted advocate and professional full contributing member of the National Bar Council of South Africa (NBCSA), Project Management Institute of South Africa (PMSA) and a member of the Construction Industry Institute (CII) in the USA. 

He has been occupying senior and executive management positions since early in his career, is an articulate and focused professional who has a proven history as a turn-around strategist with vast experience in large capital project and programme execution, commercial management, including business development and operational management. 

His profile includes 28 years’ experience in the programme, project and commercial management environment. He is an adaptable, successful and seasoned Portfolio, Programme and Senior Project Director with vast experience over multiple projects and industries

He is well known in the energy sector within South Africa specifically as legal advisory and commercial management expert and has extensive knowledge of the local utility’s (Eskom) operations, the South Africa's Renewable Energy IPP Procurement Program, the Coal Baseload IPP Procurement Programme as well as the National Nuclear Power Development Program of South Africa with established relationships at local, provincial and national government. He has been actively engaging with all stakeholders in the energy sector for the past 17 years which includes the South African Department of Energy, Nuclear Energy Regulator of South Africa, South African Wind Energy Association (SAWEA), the South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA), the South African Solar Thermal and Electricity Association (SASTELA) and various governmental departments such as the Department of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries,Department of Environmental Affairs, Department of Mineral Resources etc.  

He has excellent knowledge of Project Management Tools and Methodologies including PRINCE2 and PMBOK. He has been extensively used by companies and corporations such as the Nuclear Energy Corporation of South Africa, ESKOM, Educor, Milpark Business School (MBS), Aurecon, Sasol and various municipalities as lecturer in Contract and Construction Management, Project Management Fundamentals, Advanced Project Management including Project Definition Readiness Assessments (PDRA/ PDRI) and Frond End Planning and FEL process implementation. He is often consulted when it comes to the establishment, development, implementation and management of PMO’s (Project Management and Portfolio Offices) and PSO’s (Project Support Offices).

It is as a result of his sound reputation and ability to deliver that he was handpicked and contracted by Eskom HQ, to assist with the organizations business turn-around strategy and instrumental in the refurbishment projects, returning the mothballed power stations, Grootvlei, Komati and Camden situated in the Mpumalanga Province in South Africa back into commercial operation. 

Chris specializes in advance contract law and applies his skillset and knowledge base across the Engineering, Construction, Oil & Gas, Mining, Energy and Food & Beverage industries with 20 years’ hands-on experience in commercial and contract, claims and dispute management. His competencies include tender and bid processes, investment approval processes, vendor selection, governance models, contract types, contract structuring, EPC and EPCM contract structuring and models, contract preparations, contract risk management, evaluations and negotiations, claims (general and insurance) including experience in arbitration and mediation. 

Chris possesses strong post qualification experience which allows him to play an important and visible role in all areas of his profession. He has superb communication skills which are vital when meeting and interviewing clients to establish his company's suitability to provide the necessary advice and services to them. He is a regular speaker and facilitator in seminars and workshop for Engineering & Construction Contract Law, Oil & Gas Contracts, Claims and Disputes and Tender Process Management.
